Andrew Lack

Andrew is a self-taught photographer based in Brooklyn, New York. His lens-based work straddles the line between documentary and fictional storytelling. Continually on the search for imagery that suggests a new way of seeing our relationship with the world and each other, he is currently at work on photo projects in Upstate New York, New York City, and South Florida.

Statement

My photographic practice takes place at the site between the ordinary and the mysterious. Through the lens, I aim to tease out glimmers of another world in the one we are often too familiar with. My primary focus is the tableau, broadly conceived, with a range of backdrops depicting a mix of urban decay and natural beauty. My approach is primarily subject-based, juxtaposing figures with features in the landscape or the city that serve to heighten the tension of the photograph. Avoiding ironic detachment on the one hand and romantic sentimentality on the other, I prefer to think about my practice as an alternate form of art criticism, seeking new ways of looking at ordinary scenes. In this way, I use photography to narrate what it feels like to discover the unseen -- something that was always there but has hitherto gone unnoticed within our drab, everyday, shared reality.
