This portrait is a fictional, visual biography utilizing reclaimed and reimagined orphaned, vintage photographs. The archival pigment print is a fusion of vintage photographs and my own digital photographs, abstract drawings, and antique ephemera. I digitally alter, combine, and repurpose these elements to add narrative texture and biographical detail to the portrait.
Every color, mark, and photo that I add to the work is carefully considered to reveal a rich, personal history for the subject in this abandoned photograph. I manipulate the image by exaggerating, adding, and subtracting physical attributes to create illusory collage details that realize the story.
I develop the series by fabricating narratives, weaving together unknown people and places to create an imagined community and geographic location for the subjects of these lost and forgotten photographs. The basic human response to identify the other is endlessly intriguing to me
