Anatomy of a Heart

The human heart fascinates. It is the center of our emotions and a symbol of love. It is also an organ, a mechanical pump that circulates the blood throughout our bodies. "Anatomy of a Heart" explores this duality and is a metaphor for my inner self. Hand-carved in plywood and inlaid with forged and welded steel, this relief sculpture resembles a topographical map. Each alternating layer of wood defines the contours of the form and enhances the illusion of a fully three dimensional heart. The cool silver of the polished steel cardiac veins contrasts with the warm, rich colors of the wood.
