Heidi Jensen

This artist's practice is based in drawing and explores narratives about biology, and expands into printmaking, puppets and soft sculpture. Recent projects have been shown in solo exhibitions at Utah Museum of Contemporary Art in Salt Lake City (Sit Quietly In A Darkened Room And Think Of Nothing, 2019); the Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin (Everything Is For You Until You Discover You Are For It, 2021), the Abington Art Center in Pennsylvania (Solo Series Fall 2019). Other notable exhibitions have been with the Cluster Gallery in Brooklyn, New York; with curatorial group Things Feel Heavy in Detroit, Michigan, at the Northern Illinois Art Museum in DeKalb, IL.  She is a fellow of several residency programs, including the Vashon Artist Residency program in Vashon, WA, La Napoule Art Foundation in Mandelieu-La Napoule, France, and the Millay Colony in Austerlitz, NY.

Statement

A thread running throughout my work is confusion of the animate and inanimate, an approach to form leading back to the Surrealists. Circulating in my work are meditations on states of transformation, evolution and material culture. Buddhist teachings on desire and anger, emotions and drives that can hijack the mind, inform this work. There is tension between these ideas and the beauty of the object, in this case, a 17th century linen millstone ruff. The elaborate neck ruffles in these drawings fall apart, spit out bones, and burst into flames. The complex ruffs are contradictory; they are empty but give the illusion of fullness, they are volumetric but are comprised only of a sinuous, curving plane. In Wreathe, a dimly drawn ruffled form generates bright blue flames, reminiscent of both American hot rods and halos found in Buddhist painting. In Scatter, the ruffled form is becoming undone, and bare bones are flung into space.
