She earned an MA. Straus started exhibiting in local galleries and was granted tenure, while teaching high school Art.  Straus continued to paint and exhibit in the Hudson Valley. She setup a painting studio in a former upstate factory space. Today Straus lives in Sothern California and maintains a home and garden in the Hudson Valley. She has exhibited widely, including:small museums, galleries, and public spaces.

Statement

In this short series, Straus investigates portraits in the time of social media. Straus has said, “I am chasing the pleasure of seeing a person speak. What draws us to a speaker? How do we see in their gestures in our own mind’s eye. What are we hearing?”

Straus’ portraits are inspired by the Secessionist school. Expressive line is exaggerated and distorted. Surfaces are built up by layering oil pastel and acrylics on watercolor paper. The layers are carved away to reveal paint, oil pastel, and a marker contour drawing under the painting. All of the  compositions are constructed using social media videos.

The portraits were begun, January 2024.
