Oxana Kovalchuk

Oxana Kovalchuk, a visual artist based in New York and born in Kazakhstan, earned her MFA at the School of Visual Arts, New York, in 2019.

In her artistic exploration, Oxana Kovalchuk delves into themes of transformation, resilience, memory, psychological and cultural challenges of immigration, and adaptability to change. With a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, she seamlessly integrates her knowledge into her research and artwork.

Kovalchuk’s solo exhibitions include “A Journey to Be Continued” at the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art (Texas, 2024), "Roots" at Kente Royal Gallery (NYC, 2022), "Making Fools Pray to God” at Gallery 456 (NYC, 2022). The next solo exhibition is scheduled at the Carlisle Arts Learning Center (Pennsylvania, Spring 2025).

Along with that, Kovalchuk participated in four museum group shows: “Morning Noon Night” at the Attleboro Arts Museum (Attleboro, MA, 2024), “Spring Artist Members Exhibition”, Edward Hopper House Museum (Nyack, NY, 2024), “Exhibitour" at the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art and “Stories from my Childhood" at the Museum of Art of the Northern Illinois University.

Selected other group shows: the government-led project "Art x Climate Fifth National Climate Assessment" in Washington DC, “Absurdity” (Woman Made Gallery, Chicago IL), “Ethnicity through the Eyes of the Artists” (Abington Art Center, Jenkintown PA), “Dialogue with artists in Northeast China” (Lankai Art Gallery, Anshan City, China, 2020), to name a few.

In 2023, Kovalchuk successfully completed her inaugural collaborative project with the Only Make Believe theater, dedicated to bringing joy to children in hospitals.

In 2024, Kovalchuk was a resident artist at the Kunstraum Residency, Brooklyn, NY.

Two pieces by Oxana Kovalchuk, "Diary of Memory" and “Impossibility of Movement”, joined the collection of the Yuko Nii Foundation, Williamsburg Art & Historical Center in Brooklyn, New York, in 2021 and 2024.

A cacophony of memories and feelings, an immigrants’ adaptability, cultural shifts, and power of the human spirit are the key threads I’m pursuing as an artist. Via mixed media experiences, my work explores the relationship between myself and my life journey of a 'legal alien' through four countries. The fascination with the limitations of life led me to pursue a degree in psychology that now an underlying factor in my art. I incorporate my psychological knowledge into my creative process to introspect my artwork concept from different angles. As an artist, I also try to show connections between inner and outer worlds. Mixed media techniques allow me to add layers that are not exclusively physical but also metaphorical: our feelings and senses are not flat, time is not linear, a way of thinking is not straight-forward but more layered and curved.
